YOU HAVE TOP PERFORMING HEALTH SYSTEM

The Portuguese health system is the 12th best performing in the world and the 9th in Europe, according to the World Health Organization.

All resident citizens have access to healthcare provided by the public National Health Service across the country, including the full range of services across the continuum of care, from prevention and primary care, to acute and emergency services and rehabilitation. National hospitals and local health centres cover the whole country as well as private institutions, with modern and well-equipped health units.

Portugal is the 5th country amongst the EU28 with the highest number of doctors per 100 thousand inhabitants.

The Portuguese National Vaccination Programme is universal, free and prevents all pandemic threats - including tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, Polio, Tetanus, Cervical Cancer and major diseases. Alongside with the health system’s improvement within the last 40 years, this Vaccination Programme contributed to Portugal having one of the lowest infant mortality rates in Europe, of only 2.9 deaths per 1,000 live births (below the 3.6 EU average), positioning Portugal as one of the safest countries for a child to be born in.

Porto has a high-quality healthcare system, having excellent professionals as well as first-class hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. Many hospitals have international accreditations and ISO 9001:2000 quality certificates. Surgeries are performed by high-calibre, internationally known surgeons with advanced equipment, including robots. The main public and private hospitals in Porto include:
