Multilingual, European-oriented schooling facilities able to accommodate the needs of the children from EMA’s staff, from nursery to university, can be found in the Porto area.

Porto has much to offer when an English, French, German, or Spanish education background is required.

Children from EMA's staff will have facilitated access through the One-Stop-Shop to international schools including those teaching according to the British curricula, some of them already committed to expand the number of vacancies.

Pre-school, Primary, and Secondary Education

Preschool, Primary school (nine years) and Secondary school (three years) are universal, mandatory and free in the Portuguese public school network. English is taught from the beginning of the primary level at public schools, or from the pre-school level in private schools.

Portuguese secondary students were ranked above OECD average in the last Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2015) that compares 15-year-old students educational achievements from 65 countries in mathematics, science and reading.

There are 818 public schools and 442 private schools in the Porto Metropolitan Area (2014/2015). The number of students enrolled per level of education is presented in the table below.

Porto is home to four prestigious international schools:
  - Lycée Francais Internacional do Porto: Established in 1963, it offers from pre-school to secondary school education. As part of the global network of Agency for French Teaching Abroad (AEFE), the school provides intensive French language teaching in line with the programmes of the French government. Its diploma is recognised around the world.
  - Deutsche Schule zu Porto: Established in 1901, it is part of a network of 130 foreign German schools. The school provides a complete range of education to students, from kindergarten to secondary school, allowing them to continue their studies in Germany, Portugal or in any other country.
  - Oporto British School: Established in 1894, it is one of the oldest international schools in the world and the oldest British school in Continental Europe. The school provides an international education for students from ages 3 to 18.
  - CLIP - Colégio Luso-Internacional do Porto: Established in 1990, CLIP has students, aged 3 to 18, from 34 different countries. CLIP follows English national curriculum with local adjustments. It is accredited by the Council of International Schools.

In addition to international schools, there are also several private schools in Porto with high reputation for academic excellence and a strong focus on foreign language teaching, some with subjects taught in English.

Higher Education

Concerning higher education, there are 22 public institutions and 42 private institutions in the Porto Metropolitan Area where more than 72,000 students (incl. 6342 foreign students) are enrolled. Several degree programmes taught in English can be found in different universities and thousands of foreign students come to Porto under the Erasmus exchange programme.

The University of Porto is consistently ranked internationally as the first university in Portugal and 42nd in Europe according to CWTS Leiden Ranking 2016. It is the largest science producer in Portugal, accounting for over 23% of Portuguese scientific articles published in ISI web of Science. It hosts 14 faculties, one business school, 50 R&D units, and over 32,000 students, including 3,700 foreign students.

The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) is, according to QS World University Ranking 2016, one of the top 100 engineering schools in the world in the area of civil engineering. In addition, it is one of the top 150-200 schools in the world in the areas of chemical engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

The Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) was ranked 4th in Europe according to Arch2o ranking 2014 and one of top 100 architecture schools in the world according to QS World University Ranking 2016.

Porto Business School was ranked 62nd in Europe according to Financial Times ranking 2016. Its MBA course was ranked 21st in Europe by Eduniversal BEST-MASTERS Ranking 2015/2016 and its Executive Education Custom programme was ranked 30th in Europe according to Financial Times ranking 2016.

The Polytechnic Institute of Porto is the largest and most prestigious polytechnic institute in Portugal. It hosts seven schools, 30 R&D units, 18,000 students and around 500 foreign students.

Many universities and institutes in Porto offer courses either partially or completely taught in English, which are suitable for foreign students (see the table below). Currently, there are 9,745 students enrolled in these courses.
